The strokes of the pen need deliberation, as much as those of the sword need swiftness. – Julia Ward Howe

Oh, nature's noblest gift, my gray goose-quill!

Ornamental Penmanship can be used to beautify documents, certificates, envelopes, stationery or just to say "I love you" to that special someone.  Let our script make your sentiments elegant.

Here is the kind of pen we use for this most beautiful of art forms. As you may already know, or will soon find out, this is only one of many different styles. I think I own multiples of every style currently available. A current favorite of mine is the first oblique pen I ever purchased, one crafted by Master Penman Bill Lilly

Remember that we would be happy to do any of the art pieces on this site for you on colors other than black. Please do not hesitate to ask.

I continue to work on developing a rapid form of shaded penmanship. In this style I avoid heavy shades, as my goal is to end up with a very delicate look. Another good example of this rapid script can be seen on our Artwork page. Look at the "Native American Prayer" that I lettered.

The script on the above envelope was done using the very tiny Esterbrook 355. Needless to say the script is very small, and I did not use any whole arm movement. The floral artwork was drawn using a Zig millenium pen with a .005 tip, and color pencils.

For the shading on the above I drew leaves and then used 2 different greens and a black color pencil. The name was penned with an .005 Zig Millenium pen. There is so much you can do with a Zig Millenium pen. Get some then just play with them. Click on image for a larger view.

The above is an amalgamation of letter styles. It was done rapidly and will be well received by the recipient. Simple and elegant. Something we strive for here at The Elegant Pen.

This is a style of "A" that particularly appeals to me because of its artistic nature. It adds a certain flair to whatever you use it on. Comprised of 5 strokes it uses a combination of whole arm and muscular movements. The ending flourish of the "A" is a technique that I use a lot. Notice how I ended the shaded stroke of the "A", lifted my pen and then made the final ending flourish. The end result gives the illusion of a single stroke. Be sure to click on it for a much larger view.

This "A" is definitely artistic!

Click on the word "God" above for a real interesting variation! This was lettered yesterday in the studio. It's the first step in a new piece that I am creating. This was lettered rather large, the "G" being 4", and the lower case letters 1". I took it into Adobe Photoshop and played with it for awhile. The outcome is very interesting. Your lettering combined with programs like Photoshop or Illustrator can result in some very interesting pieces. Being an artist, when I come up with something new my mind is immediately filled with a riot of new ideas, things I want to try.

The above client loves hummingbirds so I came up with a pointed pen variation of that wondrous little creation. Click on it for a larger view.

Our client for the "Vineyard Place" wanted a look that would make you think of grape vines. After showing her a few of my ideas and getting feedback I showed her this one. It was an instant hit. It is for the cover of a soon to be published cookbook.  Click on it for a larger view.

I designed and created 1/2 of the heart image, scanned it into Adobe Photoshop, duplicated it, and completed the heart design. "I love you" in Master Penman Brian Walker's pointed pen style was also scanned in and then placed inside the image of the heart. After printing it off in an A2 size I hand colored it with a red oil color pencil.

The above flourish is from the piece entitled, "The Sands of Time". Click on it for a close-up very. This is a large image so expect a longer download time if you do not have a high speed connection.

Remember 2 very important things when flourishing.

1. Whole arm movement
2. Simplicity.

Whole-arm movement is a MUST if you want a flourish to flow smoothly and look strong. A quiver in your line or stroke will weaken the letter or the flourish. You also do not want to overdo your flourishing and let it take on the appearance of a plate of spaghetti. Quit while you are ahead. :o)

Though far from perfect capital D's the example below demonstrates whole-arm movement. There are no quivers in the lines which is a good thing. Click on image for larger view.

What you see above is an inscription for a Bible that we just completed. (The Bible's owner lives in Sweden by the way. I can't remember where though so I don't know if he is near our friend, Hans Presto, or not.) Engrosser's Script, Spencerian and Flourishing were all used in the piece. Call or write for details if you would like us to do something like this for you.
