An overview of the inks within this review series is available here. Nioi-Sumire is the first of two inks that make up the spring inks in the Four Seasons series.
It is a lovely blue violet colour that is very similar to the discontinued Ultra Marine.

Writing Sample: Jentle Nioi-Sumire by Sailor
Shading: Subtle shading from light to dark violet on ink resistant papers.
Bleed Through: This ink bleeds through on Field Notes and shows spot bleeding on Copy paper, Rhodia fairs just fine.
Show Through: The back side of Field Notes is unusable and Copy paper is questionable, Rhodia is just fine.
Saturation: Average saturation.
Water Resistance: While not waterproof by a long shot, writing would still be legible after a spill.
Drying Time: Exceptionally long dry time, 40+ seconds using an EF nib on Rhodia. Dry time is much quicker on absorbent papers.
Flow: Average flow. Average lubrication.
Cleaning: Yet to be determined. Will update. Ultra Marine has proved challenging in the past.
Colour Make Up
This ink is comprised of cerulean, violet and indigo in almost equal parts.
Current Ink – Sailor Nioi-Sumire vs. Sailor Ultramarine – Discontinued Ink
As can be seen in the chromatography samples above and the writing samples below, Ultra Marine has a slight pink component to the violet that makes for an ever so slightly warmer colour than Nioi-Sumire. I don’t think that this would be detectable to the average user and if you already own one of the above inks, I don’t think that you should go out of your way to acquire the second.
Sailor Nioi-Sumire vs. Ultra Marine
This ink is certainly suitable for the workplace. It is a dark blue that leans towards purple so it has a little more interest than stock blue. For myself, while I like the colour, it wouldn’t be my go to every day ink. I already own Ultra Marine and the two are so close in colour that it doesn’t make sense to add this one to my collection.
