An overview of the inks within this review series is available here. Souten is the first of two inks that make up the summer inks in the Four Seasons series.
It is a lovely vibrant blue colour that makes you think of sunny skies. Being this colour, it is very similar to the aptly named and now discontinued colour, Sky High.

Writing Sample: Jentle Souten
Shading: Really nice shading.
Bleed Through: This ink bleeds through on Field Notes and shows minor spot bleeding on Copy paper, Rhodia fairs just fine.
Show Through: The back side of Field Notes is questionable but Copy paper is OK. Rhodia is just fine.
Saturation: Average saturation.
Sheen: I see a very little bit of pink sheen but it does not show up in the scans.
Water Resistance: Writing on Rhodia may or may not be legible after a spill but more absorbent papers would be fine.
Drying Time: About average dry time, 20-25 seconds using an EF nib on Rhodia. Dry time is much quicker on absorbent papers.
Flow: Average flow. Average lubrication.
Cleaning: Cleaning was fine after a short duration in a Lamy converter but I have had staining issues with Sky High in other converter materials, so be warned.
Colour Make Up
This ink is comprised of cerulean and nothing else.
Sailor Souten vs. Sky High
Current Ink vs. Discontinued Ink – I can tell no difference between these two inks. Any difference in the swabs is because the Sky High one was wetter when it was applied to the paper. Anybody who pays inflated secondary market prices for Sky High is being sold hype rather than substance.
This ink is suitable for the workplace but some may consider it too bright of a blue. For myself, I already own Sky High and I am unable to see any difference between the two inks so I won’t be adding this one to my collection. Don’t let that stop you though, It performs well and is a very solid ink to have around.
